Project Euler Lab - Problem 30

#30 - Digit Fifth Powers

↖ Euler Lab

Surprisingly there are only three numbers that can be written as the sum of fourth powers of their digits: \[\begin{align} 1634 &= 1^4 + 6^4 + 3^4 + 4^4\\ 8208 &= 8^4 + 2^4 + 0^4 + 8^4\\ 9474 &= 9^4 + 4^4 + 7^4 + 4^4 \end{align}\]

As \(1 = 1^4\) is not a sum it is not included.

The sum of these numbers is \(1634 + 8208 + 9474 = 19316\).

Find the sum of all the numbers that can be written as the sum of fifth powers of their digits.

Why this is useful

General Problem Solving. Builds computational thinking, decomposition, and debugging discipline - transferable, without a specific financial application.

We classify relevance honestly - not every Euler problem is a trading application.

Learning mode

Pick how much scaffolding you want. Your choice is remembered per problem.

Python workbench

Tier A - full browser execution
Runs at full original scale within the browser limits.

Real Python (Pyodide) in a sandboxed Web Worker - no network, no filesystem, no DOM access. Ctrl/Cmd+Enter runs. Escape leaves the editor. Stop terminates the worker.

Python runtime not loaded (it boots on first run - a one-time local load).

Spoiler
The complete original explanation (interpretation, naive approach, insight, proof, complexity, Python implementation, tests, common mistakes, alternatives) is hidden and lazy-loaded. Reveal it only after a meaningful attempt - the struggle is where the learning happens.
