↖ Euler Lab

A list initially contains the numbers \(2, 3, \dots, n\).
At each round, the smallest number in the list is replaced by its square. If there is more than one such number, then only one of them is replaced.

For example, below are the first three rounds for \(n = 5\): \[[2, 3, 4, 5] \xrightarrow{(1)} [4, 3, 4, 5] \xrightarrow{(2)} [4, 9, 4, 5] \xrightarrow{(3)} [16, 9, 4, 5].\]

Let \(S(n, m)\) be the sum of all numbers in the list after \(m\) rounds.

For example, \(S(5, 3) = 16 + 9 + 4 + 5 = 34\). Also \(S(10, 100) \equiv 845339386 \pmod{1234567891}\).

Find \(S(10^4, 10^{16})\). Give your answer modulo \(1234567891\).

Why this is useful

Mathematical Foundation. Exact integer reasoning and algorithmic efficiency. Foundational rigour and computational discipline rather than a direct trading application.

We classify relevance honestly - not every Euler problem is a trading application.

Python workbench

Tier C - reduced scale in browser; full scale in notebook
Browser runs a reduced, clearly-labelled educational scale; the original scale is provided in a local notebook.

Real Python (Pyodide) in a sandboxed Web Worker - no network, no filesystem, no DOM access. Ctrl/Cmd+Enter runs. Escape leaves the editor. Stop terminates the worker.

Python runtime not loaded (it boots on first run - a one-time local load).

Answers are checked against a salted hash held in a separate file - not printed in this page. This prevents accidental spoilers; it is not cryptographic protection (see the build notes).

Reference solution

Spoiler
The complete original explanation (interpretation, naive approach, insight, proof, complexity, Python implementation, tests, common mistakes, alternatives) is hidden and lazy-loaded. Reveal it only after a meaningful attempt - the struggle is where the learning happens.
