The Core Engine: Retrieval, Spacing, and Interleaving

Intuition & Motivation
Spacing and interleaving exploit the same mechanism. Spacing lets a little forgetting set in so each review is real retrieval work. Interleaving forces you to choose the method, which is the skill actually tested on exams and in research.
1. The testing effect (retrieval practice)
In controlled studies, students who study then test themselves dramatically outperform students who study the same material twice - even when the testers feel less confident. Retrieval is not just measurement; it is one of the strongest memory-building operations known.
2. The spacing effect
Given a fixed budget of, say, five reviews, spreading them over two weeks beats doing all five today. Each spaced review occurs after some forgetting, so it demands genuine retrieval and resets the forgetting curve from a higher point.
3. Interleaving vs. blocking
Blocking (all problems of type A, then all of type B) makes each block feel smooth because you already know which method to use. Interleaving (A, C, B, A, ...) feels harder and lowers in-session scores - yet it produces far better performance on later mixed tests, because real problems don’t announce their type.

- Retrieval: every lesson ends with closed-book retrieval prompts and a scored knowledge check.
- Spacing: flashcards use an SM-2 expanding schedule; the review queue surfaces items when they are due.
- Interleaving: phase exams and mixed problem sets deliberately shuffle topics and methods.
- Desirable difficulty: prediction gates make you commit an answer before seeing the computation.

Adjust reviews and watch retrievability. The point: spaced successful recalls flatten the decay.
- Cramming: massing all study before a deadline - high short-term recall, fast forgetting.
- Judging a study method by how good it feels in the moment (fluency), not by delayed test performance.
- Reviewing items you already know well while ignoring due items - the queue exists to prevent this.
- Blocking practice right up to an exam that will interleave topics.
- Trust the discomfort: if practice feels easy, you are probably not learning much.
- Let the review queue schedule you; do the due items first each day.
- Convert every lesson’s key results into 3–5 flashcards immediately, while context is fresh.
- Interleave old and new: never practice a brand-new method in isolation for long.

You learn Itô’s lemma on day 0. Using an expanding schedule with ease factor 2.5 and first interval 1 day, list the review days for the first four successful recalls. Then state what happens to the schedule if you fail the third review.
First interval = 1 day, then multiply by \(EF=2.5\) on each success (rounding):
- Review 1: day 0 + 1 = day 1.
- Review 2: day 1 + round(1×2.5)=day 1+3 ≈ day 4 (SM-2 uses 6 for the 2nd; either convention is fine if stated). Using SM-2’s fixed second interval of 6: day 7.
- Review 3: previous interval × 2.5 ≈ 15 days → ~day 22.
- Review 4: 15 × 2.5 ≈ 38 days → ~day 60.
If you fail the third review, the interval resets to 1 day: you review the next day, and the expansion restarts from the short interval (ease factor also decreases slightly). The failure is informative - it flags a weak chunk for rebuilding.

Retrieval Practice
Close the lesson and answer from memory before checking. This is deliberate, effortful recall - the single highest-yield study action.
A: Retrieving information strengthens memory more than re-studying it for equal time - even when retrieval feels less fluent.
A: It forces you to choose the correct method (not just execute a known one), matching the demand of mixed real problems; blocking inflates only in-session fluency.
A: A failed recall resets the interval to ~1 day, quickly re-exposing weak items; successes multiply the interval, concentrating effort where it is needed.
